Description:

The Association "Berliner Unterwelten" (Berlin Underworlds) researches underground buildings and their context in history and urban development. It was founded in 1997 by people from all walks of life. Our members contribute to the organization in many different ways with their skills, abilities and talents, to lead our projects to success. Focusing on the history of Berlin's underground, the organization deals largely with uncharted territory and consequently attracts a lot of public attention. The indicators of this success are the books written by organization members, which have already been published in multiple editions.

Cold War Interests:

The society Berliner Unterwelten covers with its guided tours two major issues from the Cold War era on authentic places.
Our guests on Tour 3 will visit two former public fallout shelters where they learn how Berlin became a "Hot Spot" during the Cold War, which threated politics and citizens expected and how the government thought we should survive underground.
Our tour M tells the story of Berlins division by barwire and concrete, of families and friendships torn apart, and of escape routes underground - through subway tunnels, sewers and hand built escape tunnels. Visitors will learn about those who wanted to help, those who had to guard a border and those who became tragic heroes.
Our knowledge about Berlin in the Cold War is countinuously expanding through research in various archives.
